British Columbia
Road trip!
*insert girlish squeal here*
Tomorrow I leave on a week-long road trip to Kamloops/Victoria/Vancouver and I am so beyond excited. First off I get to meet Mia in Invermere, a blooming photographer who is going to be studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) this coming year. Read Canada’s waterfront playground without being on the ocean. It’s absolutely beautiful down there. And if you are really imaginative when coming out of Radium you can pretend it is an Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade-esque moment when they come across the entrance to the Holy Grail place (right. Not-a-movie-nerd.)
Next I visit my ridiculously good (looking) friend and talented photographer Dani in Kamloops. Confession. The name reminds me of a cereal. See I am already giddy with excitement as you are guaranteed good conversation (and I am not going to lie good food and coffee) with Dani and her husband. Also, may be my first and only time seeing a popcorn maker converted into a coffee roaster. Brilliant? I think yes.
After that it is through the wild lands of interior British Columbia to the horrible traffic of Vancouver suburbia and onto a boat to Victoria where I am going to see my good friend from High School, Kara, who I haven’t seen since we graduated (insanity). (Also this run on sentence is for her. She’s an uber literate individual – I suck at grammar. It’s just the way it works.)
Then I’ll head back to Vancouver and on the weekend second a wedding with the lovely Amber. Bound to be a delightful week eh?
So I need your opinion. I am going to be shooting plenty and need someone to make up their mind for me. On each driving day I will be stopping at one town to shoot a roll and document it. I’m indecisive so I am letting you decide. Leave your thoughts in the comments please and thank you! (said with a smile)
Day 1
1. Golden | I love Golden. It is tucked off the main road and has this nice little amalgamation of old and new with most of it’s focus on it’s history with the Canadian Pacific Railway.
2. Revelstoke | It’s the ultimate pit stop as there is something between nothing and nothing between Golden and Revelstoke (read I’ll be stopping at a Tim Hortons for bad coffee anyways). It also proudly shares it’s connection to the CPR and apparently is also the landing site of a meteorite in 1965 and holds the Canadian record for the snowiest winter with 2447cm of snow (that’s 80 feet of the white stuff).
3. Sicamous | It has an awesome name. That’s all. Sic-a-moose. e.g. Upon seeing the rogue poutine thief escape on his skidoo the RCMP commissioner turned to his inspector and declared “He deked! Sic-a-mous!” See. It can be used as an order to set moose upon someone, an expletive or a new destination. Awesome!
4. Salmon Arm | Equally as random of a name as say Moosejaw. We excel at randomosity in Canada. On the shores of Shuswap Lake (which I just noticed totally looks like a chromosome), Salmon Arm is pretty and deals with forestry (I honestly can not come up with a better description from looking at Wikipedia).
5. Chase | Never ever stopped here. Logging central, may have interesting buildings, may just be a photographic challenge (Oh look. Another tree!)
Day 2
1. Merritt | Nestled (every little town is nestled isn’t it? Fancy that) in the Nicola Valley it thinks it is as grand as Kamloops – it isn’t.
2. Hope | All I know of Hope is that it has ridiculously long lineups at the local Subway.
I know I sold all these places didn’t I? You just want to come to Canada and explore all these towns of randomosity with me next time right? Grand. Okay. Choose away. Your future blog post depends on it.
Also, Merritt sucks. I’d vote for Hope for day two.
(Btw, I do realize, of course, that you are referring to Kamloops as a cereal name. The funny thing is, it’s less granola than the far West.)
My name reminds you of a cereal?? Anyway, I am delighted and awed that I have been mentioned on your blog in such a flattering and SEO-building way (aside from the cereal)!
Nate is currently trying to shampoo the soon-to-be-reupholstered-but-in-the-meantime-gross-looking love-seat that hides the hide-a-bed you’ll be sleeping on. Like most parts of our house, it will look bad but at least be clean.
Revelstoke has some bakeries to be proud of. I’d stop there.
How can you forget Spuzzum?!
Zohmygoodness! How have I not heard of Spuzzum?! Unfortunately not directly on my route so not this time around but crumb! That’s an amazing town name!
